Andrea C Ferrari Director, Cambridge Graphene Centre, University of Cambridge, UK
Keynote title: “Graphene and related materials for photonics and optoelectronics”
Andrea C. Ferrari is Professor of Nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge. He is the Founding Director of the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) and of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Graphene technology. He is the Chair of the Management Panel and the Science and Technology Officer of the 1 Billion Euros, EU Graphene flagship. He is a recognised leader in graphene engineering, having pioneered bulk production, mass scale identification by optical and spectroscopic means, implementation in composites, printed and flexible electronics, lasers, photo-detectors, microcavities, plasmonic enhanced structures. He is author of over 360 papers and 220 plenaries, keynote and invited talks. He has over 80,000 citations, with an H index of 99. He received the Royal Society Brian Mercer Award for Innovation, the Marie Curie Excellence Award, the Philip Leverhulme Prize, the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, the EU-40 Materials Prize, a Fellowship of the American Physical Society, a Fellowship of the Institute of Physics, a Fellowship of the Materials Research Society, a Fellowship of the Optical Society, a Cambridge ScD, the Charles E. Pettinos Award of the American Carbon Society, ACS Nano Award Lectureship, to name a few.
Vincent Urick Program Manager, Strategic Technology Office (DARPA), USA
Keynote title: “Photonics for microwave systems: present capabilities and future opportunities”
Dr. Vincent J. Urick joined the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in May 2016 as a program manager in the Strategic Technology Office. His research interests include photonics, electronic warfare, and sensing in urban environments. His position prior to DARPA was head of the Applied Radio Frequency Photonics Section at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). His work at NRL included fundamental research as well as the transition of photonics technology to the Navy and other Defense Department agencies. Dr. Urick has published over 100 works in the field of microwave photonics including the book Fundamentals of Microwave Photonics. Dr. Urick received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Bloomsburg University and Master of Science and doctorate degrees in applied physics from George Mason University.
Jian-Wei Pan Director, Division of Quantum Physics and Quantum Information (USTC), China
Keynote title: “Scalable Quantum Information Processing with Photons and Atoms”
Pan Jianwei is a quantum physicist. In 1987 he entered the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), from which he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He received his PhD from the University of Vienna, in Vienna, Austria, where he worked in the group of Anton Zeilinger. He is mainly known for his work in the field of quantum entanglement. His team demonstrated five-photon entanglement in 2004.
He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 and The World Academy of Sciences in 2012. Under his leadership, the world’s first quantum satellite launched successfully in August 2016 as part of the Quantum Experiments at Space Scale international research project. In June 2017, Pan’s team used their quantum satellite to demonstrate entanglement with satellite-to-ground total summed lengths between 1600km and 2400km and entanglement distribution over 1200 km between receiver stations. In 2017, the journal Nature named Pan Jianwei among the top 10 people who mattered in the year, with the label “Father of quantum” (Liàngzĭ zhī fù).
Roberto Battiston President, Italian Space Agency (ASI), Italy
Keynote title: “Photons & Space”
Roberto Battiston, Since 2014, President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Chair of General Physics at the Trento Physics Department. He has worked for over 30 years in international collaborations in the field of experimental physics and fundamental interactions: Strong interactions, Electroweak interaction physics, Search for antimatter and dark matter in Cosmic Rays. Author of more than 420 papers published on international scientific journals. Organiser of several workshops devoted to space science and to advanced technologies (Trento 1999, Elba 2002, Washington 2003, Bejijng 2006, CERN 2012).
